Market Alert 10/11

Updated: Oct 14, 2022

Lock in your rate! Rates are rising - UK’s recent market instability can be traced back to the rise of their 10-year Gilt. In just a span of two months, the Gilt increased from under 2% to 4.5%. This caught UK’s pensions funds off guard as they were leveraged in Bond products, resulting in significant losses and margin calls.

The UK’s central bank, BOE, had to intervene and started buying Gilts to stabilize the markets; however, this created more uncertainty as it’s hard to imagine that BOE would want to sell Gilts at the end of the month.

Consequently, this has caused higher global yields which then creates more competition and can cause our rates to rise—something we are currently seeing.
