The Real Reason Some People Are Still Moving Right Now

A lot of people right now are thinking the same thing: “We’ll just wait.”
Wait for mortgage rates to drop.Wait for prices to come down.Wait for the market to feel easier.
And that makes sense on the surface. But what many are slowly realizing is this:
Waiting doesn’t usually change the reason you wanted to move in the first place.
The life situation that pushed you to consider a move is still there.
The growing family that needs more space
The empty nest that suddenly feels too quiet
Parents or loved ones who need to be closer
A marriage, a separation, or a major life reset
A retirement vision that no longer fits where you are
At some point, the decision stops being about timing the market—and starts being about living your life.
That’s why people are still moving today, even in a higher-rate, more uncertain environment. Not because conditions are perfect, but because their needs didn’t pause while the market shifted.
Life Changes Don’t Wait for Market Conditions
According to the National Association of Realtors, 1 in 5 buyers recently said they felt they had to buy when they did—regardless of market conditions.
And that urgency isn’t rare.
NAR also estimates that around 22.5 million people experience a major life change within a typical two-year span. These include things like job changes, family growth, downsizing, or relocation for lifestyle reasons.

As Redfin’s Head of Economics Research, Chen Zhao, puts it:
“Life doesn’t stand still—people get new jobs, grow their families, downsize after retirement, or simply want to live in a different neighborhood.”
The Real Challenge of Waiting
That’s the part that often gets overlooked.
Every month spent waiting for “better conditions” is still a month living in a home that may no longer fit your life.
And that gap—between where you are and where you need to be—is what creates the real frustration. For many people, the decision to move isn’t about timing the market anymore.
It’s about aligning their home with the life they’re already living.
